The Golden Mask

The Crew received word that someone called Sir Mournseller was looking to hire them and wanted to meet them in a derelict house in Crow’s Feet. Before heading to the meeting, the Crew tried to find out a bit more about Sir Mournseller. They discovered that he was a ghost, having died a good few years ago, and had been an Inspector while alive. His ghost was known to frequent the Draymap Asylum and possess some of the inmates there.

The Crew were met at the derelict house by the most recent inmate possessed by the ghost. Sir Mournseller seemed to take great delight in torturing his host, and his conversation was regularly interrupted by the inmate violently punching himself. Sir Mournseller wanted the Crew to steal an item called the Golden Mask from a corrupt city clerk called Holst who lived in Brightstone. Holst had secreted many objects of value in an abandoned open air stage on the outskirts of Brightstone. The entrance was sealed by a lock that required four stones to be pressed in a particular sequence. Sir Mournseller also knew the sequence. In return he offered the Crew some old paintings he had buried while he was still alive and whatever they wanted to take from Holst’s stash - Sir Mournseller was only interested in the Golden Mask. He cautioned the Crew not to put on the Mask.

The Crew did not trust the ghost, particularly one that possessed lunatics, and even more so because Sir Mournseller appeared to have all the information necessary to retrieve the Golden Mask, but had made no attempt to get it himself. Eventually Sir Mournseller relented and gave the Crew the location of the buried paintings as a show of good faith. The Crew found the paintings in another abandoned house, along with the corpses of at least half a dozen inmates from Draymap Asylum that had died of the injuries that Sir Mournseller had had them inflict on themselves. Four of the six paintings were in sellable condition and appeared to worth a good amount of coin. The Crew returned to Sir Mournseller and accepted his offer.

The abandoned open stage was located in a run-down estate just inside Brightstone, and was guarded by a gang and some dogs. Fortunately the guards did not appear interested in the stage so the Crew felt that they could sneak to the stage without being detected. They reached the stage without any issues, but Jude received some nasty scratches on his arm when the Crew were clearing vines that had grown over the stones used to open the vault. The sequence provided by Sir Mournseller was correct, and the Crew swiped the Golden Mask from Holst’s vault, along with as much of value as they could carry.

John tried to attune with the Golden Mask and was able to discover that the spirit of a wealthy aristocrat was contained within the Mask. However, doing so caused an electrical discharge from the Mask that left John badly scorched. The Crew returned the Mask to Sir Mournseller, and then fenced their gains for a decent amount of coin.

The group paid a tithe to Bazzo of The Lampblacks from their earnings. This gang was very close to destroying the Red Sashes, which would dramatically change the power structure within Crow’s Feet, particularly as The Crows were still recovering from recent setbacks. The Crew reasoned that angering The Lampblacks was not a good idea. They did, however, risk poaching a Fence for their gang from another gang called The Lost, who were allies of The Crows. The Crew were hoping that The Crows would be too preoccupied with the possibility of The Lampblacks seizing control of Crow’s Feet for them to be bothered about one of their allies losing a Fence. The Fence was called Noggs, and Weaver was able to obtain some useful information about him from a Bluecoat contact which allowed Jude to convince Noggs to join their gang.
