The team arrived in Shanghai. Edward arranged for the help from a local contact, a member of the triads called Wong Loong Kok. Wong met them at the docks and the team then went to Delores house in Shanghai to meet with her.
The Herbert and Kok went to the harbour to investigate the ship 'Dark mistress'. The harbourmaster said the ship was last seen in port yesterday. The captain was called Savoyard and pointed the them to the post office to find out the registration details. The post office advised the ship was British registered and to a Sir Alfred Penhurst.
They then went to the Ho Fong imports warehouse. Part of the warehouse was built on pilings over the river. The warehouse windows had bars of iron. The receptionist claimed to not have heard of the Dark Mistress. He suggested if they were interested in artefacts they should try the museum. On the pretext of wanting to ship a crate Herbert and Kok were shown round the warehouse. There were six guards and stacks of goods of all descriptions.
They then went to the Yellow Lilly bar. The staff had not heard of Jack Brady and neither had the customers. They then went to the stumbling tiger bar. There were some European sailors as well as Chinese, but no one had heard of the Dark Mistress or captain Savoyard. The barman recognised Jack Brady and had heard he went to Rangoon to see Charlie Gray about a weapons deal at the beginning of the year. Herbert made arrangements with several sailors to meet near the Ho Fong warehouse in the evening.
In the evening Herbert and Kok went to meet the sailors at the warehouse. Kok noticed several china men following but they faded away when they arrived at the warehouse. The guard would not take bribes. Kok then unlocked the padlock on the rear door. There were six guards waiting inside. Kok was badly wounded before the sailors leapt to the fight. Herbert killed the guard fighting Kok. The sailors downed four of the guards at the expense of one of their own who was knocked unconscious. Kok then killed the last guard.
Herbert patched up the injured and Kok then searched the offices. He found nothing of interest. There was a guard in the guard room who was tied up. Kok unlocked the door to another small storeroom. It was full of statues and artwork. There was a trapdoor opening up to provide access from the river below. There were also six small crates labelled AP. Three were addressed: H.A. Wilcox, 7 Thomas Street, Providence, Rhode Island, USA; Mr. W. Whateley, General Delivery, Dunwich, Massachusetts, USA and Mr. Herbert West, c/o Miskatonic University Medical School, Arkham, Massachusetts, USA. Kok killed the guard on reception before they opened the crates which was likely to make noise. They were full of parts. Herbert thought they might be to do with rockets. Herbert kept a few bits and the rest were dumped through the trapdoor into the water. The crates were then resealed with other stuff from the warehouse so the missing content would not be realised until they were delivered. Kok made sure the rest of the guards were dead.
Herbert and Kok then went upstairs to Mr Ho's office. There were rolled up charts and atlases. Filing cabinets stuffed with papers and a safe in the floor. Kok opened the safe. Inside was 300 Mexican silver dollars, 500 £5 notes, 2 negotiable drafts for 77000 yen and 30 x 20 dollar gold coins. One of the maps looked to be of particular interest. There was also documentation detailing shipping consignments: Ho Fong had shipped to and received items from the Penhew Foundation (London) and Ahja Singh (Mombasa) - mostly "art objects", though books were referred to also. These shipments were also sent to Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. In the same file were notations concerning shipments of mining equipment to Mortimer Wycroft of Cuncudgerie in Western Australia.
As they left, Herbert was spotted by two policemen. A commotion ensued which attracted attention from dockworkers. Kok shouted for help saying the police were brutalising them. Two of the dockworkers stepped in to help, allowing Kok and Herbert to break free and run. After a chase they managed to escape.
Herbert and Kok laid low, rested and healed at Delores house. Herbert also visited the library where he found another map showing the location of Gray dragon island which was a dormant volcano 300 miles off coast of Shanghai.
The team went to the offices of the Shanghai courier to look through their archive. They found several articles of interest [see here]. There were also older reports of more murders, with victims arms severed from their bodies. Six months ago a trawler was struck by a freak wave near Gray dragon island. It was reported that fishermen avoid the area.
The team went to Chin Ling road to find out more about the monks at the town gods temple. They spoke to Bons, the head priest. He was not there when the fire occurred but knew some of what happened. The monks were gathered in conversation with a European when a fire erupted and behaved peculiarly. The European fled and the monks were killed. He had previously seen the European briefly and recognised him as Jack Brady from a photograph. Bons thought the fire could have been caused by a fire demon. Edward spotted several people taking an interest in the team. They ran off when Edward pointed at them.
Kok went to ask his contacts if anyone with Brady's description had purchased a forged passport recently. The rest of the team went to the Seamens club. They found no evidence the structure had been undermined. There were builders repairing the damage. The foreman helped the team by translating so they could speak to the locals who claimed the club was attacked by walking octopuses. They also recognised Brady from the photo as having been present.
Kok then met up with the team and they went to Lantern street to investigate the murders. They occurred at a brothel near the Stumbling tiger bar. Delores payed the madam to answer some questions. They were shown the room where the murders took place. The walls, floor and ceiling were splattered with blood. There was a witness who went crazy and was now in a local hospital. Brady had visited the brothel several times and took an interest in one of the girls called Chi Mi Ling who the madam had since sold to another establishment further up the street run by someone called The Doctor.
The team then visited the Doctor. There were unusual symbols above the door which Herbert recognised as being Taoist. He said Chi Mi Ling had run away. He had seen Brady once. The team then went to the Stumbling Tiger bar to ask about Brady again. Herbert smashed a bottle of whiskey over the head of the barman and accused him of lying about Brady. He barman drew a pistol and shot Herbert who fell to the floor. Edward shot him and he surrendered. He said Brady was hanging around with Chu Min, leader of the New China Movement who believed Europeans were corrupt. He owed a favour to Brady and so had been trying to protect him.
Herbert returned to Delore's mansion to recuperate.
The team returned to the offices of the Shanghai courier. Edward spotted people following the group again and grabbed one of them. He said he worked for Lin Tang-Yu, the head of one of the tongs and was following the team because they had been asking about Brady. Lin was angry because Brady had stolen something. He would not take the team to Lin but gave has address.
The team visited Lin and were admitted after mentioning they were enemies of Brady. Lin was an old man who was sitting on a throne. Brady had stolen an ancient scroll called the seven cryptical books of Hasan from him. Lin invited Delores out for the evening. Behind Lin was a curtain and there was something moving behind it. Edward drew the curtain and behind it was a white ape. It obeyed the commands on Lin. The team borrowed three books from him, I Ching which was written in mandarin, Malius Maliforcarum written in Latin, and oracles of Nostradamus written in English.
Delores returned and enjoyed the evening with Lin. Edward read the Nostradamus book which was full of prophesies. Herbert read the Malius Maliforcarum which was about the inquisition and witches. Kok read I Ching which Was one of five classics of Confucius.
The team let Herbert rest for a couple of days. Delores taught Edward the spell 'Flesh ward'. While learning the spell, Edward had a moment of clarity and realised the seven cryptical books of Hasan could be used with the eye of light and darkness which was a powerful force against darkness and the mythos.
Six men arrived from Lin. They knew the warehouse where the New China Movement were. Delores sent them to scout out the warehouse to find out more about it. They returned reporting there were 8 people in the warehouse with a large stock of weapons though Brady was not present. The team went with them to the warehouse in the evening. Lin's men reported there was now 10 guards inside and they thought Brady was also there.
Kok heard Brady saying Chu was still missing but the timetable on the island was not affected. The team attacked. Seven of the guards died before they knew they were under attack. Brady shot and killed one of Lin's men. The guards shot, hitting Kok and 3 of Lins men. Edward opened fire with his tommy gun, missing, before the guards killed the rest of Lin's men as Brady's gun jammed.
Edward fired again, killing one of the guards. Delores shot another, and Brady threw down his gun and surrendered, calling on the last guard to do likewise.
Brady had a brass plate in his coat pocked with his name on it. He said it was his lucky plate. The team returned to Delores house with Brady. Brady told a tale [See here]. He said the monks were helping a mystic called Mu Chin translate the seven cryptical books of Hasan. Milton drugged Brady so he slept overnight.
The team rested and recovered from the fight. Milton and Edward went to visit Mu Chin. They found no one at home and searched the house. They found maps of grey dragon island and a revolver. They asked a neighbour where he might be and was told he worked in the Shanghai museum. They went there and found his office. After some interrogation he admitted to knowing Brady. He was translating the books but progress was slow.
Brady insisted that his girlfriend Chi Mi Ling be rescued. She was being held by the doctor. Delores persuaded him to wait until after grey dragon island had been dealt with.
One of Lin's henchmen arrived asking for an update. Delores told him of the fight in the warehouse but said Brady had not been there.
The team visited Mu at the museum. He had combined part of a symbol in the books with a photograph Herbert had taken in Egypt and found it had to be drawn to create the eye of light and darkness. It could be used to counter Nyarlathotep's power on this world for a long time.
The team set out to travel to grey dragon island. Brady had access to a junk and Delores paid to hire a crew. Delores left a message at her house for Lin's henchman to say they were looking for his scrolls. In the evening Delores sang badly to her captive audience.
In the afternoon the island came into view. Milton and Delores cast a flesh ward spell. Kok had learned the spell but miss-cast it, causing a blue glow to briefly radiate from the ship. Kok and Milton spotted a hut in a tree where the lookout station was marked on the map. There was a figure on the top holding a rifle. The junk was sailed to the dock where the dark mistress was moored. Someone on the dock flashed in Morse code to identify and Brady replied sent by Hong Fu.
The junk docked next to the dark mistress. The team opened fire, killing the lookouts on the boat and on the dock. Brady, Milton, Edward and Kok ran across the dock to the dark mistress. Milton spotted a green glow coming from the firebox at the rear of the dark mistress. Edward threw a grenade inside, spotting a glowing green rock inside as he did so.
Kok and Milton crept inside the ship where they were attacked by three crewmembers. Milton blasted one with his shotgun as Kok beheaded another. Delores and Herbert saw a dark figure climbing out of the water by the dark mistress. Herbert shot and killed it but three others could be seen. Delores shot one of them and Edward sprayed them with his tommy gun killing another. Kok killed the last crewman. One of the creatures from the sea attacked Edward as the other was killed by Delores as it moved to descended into the ship. Edward picked up the glowing green rock with a shovel and threw it into the water.
The crew quarters was a mess. The captains quarters had crude pornography. The engine room had pipes similar to what had been found in Ho Fong's warehouse. Kok lit a fire in the engine room then left the ship. The fire seemed to spread supernaturally fast and the dark mistress was quickly ablaze as twelve people, though they were only just recognisable as people because they all seemed to be horribly deformed – rushed the dock.
Dolores and Jack frantically tried to sever the moorings of The Dark Mistress and push her away from the dock before it caught fire. Unfortunately pushing a flaming 90’ boat was not easy. Edward and Herbert were able to drop 8 of the attackers before Edward’s tommy gun ran out of ammo and the remaining 4 attackers reached hand-to-hand. Edward heroically tried to protect Dolores and killed one of his assailants before the second knocked him unconscious. Herbert dealt with his attacker, and with the dock now on fire Dolores and Jack abandoned their now pointless efforts to shove The Dark Mistress away and finished off the last 2. Just as another 10 or so emerged from the village.
Edward was dragged onto the junk and the crew then moved it away from the dock. Kok hit one of the villagers with his crossbow and Milton hit another with his shotgun, killing him. Kok hit his target again but he still did not die. Milton killed a second villager. Herbert shot one. Delores also shot and killed one. Brady hit three with a burst from his tommy gun, killing them. Kok killed the villager he had been firing at as did Herbert. Delores killed the last villager but more were emerging from the trees.
Milton killed one of the emerging villagers as they charged forward. Kok hit another for a glancing blow. Delores shot and killed the villager Kok had hit. Milton hit another. Brady killed another three in a burst of fire. Herbert killed one of the villagers that was rushing to attack Delores as she took aim at a sniper she saw in the trees. Milton killed another villager. Kok skewered the villager attacking him. Delores shot the sniper between the eyes. Kok hit the villager attacking Herbert. The villager attacking Brady stabbed him, but the blow was deflected.
Two fish creatures called deep ones emerged from the water. Delores shot and killed one. Kok killed the villager attacking Herbert. An enormous monstrosity called a Shoggoth which looked like a huge blob with tentacles burst out of the water. Herbert ran screaming towards it in a temporary insane fit, believing it was holding his beloved Naomi, and Milton became inflicted with an extreme paranoia. Brady shot the Shoggoth but it seemed to have little effect. Delores also shot it as she retreated towards the forest. Kok skewered the second deep one. It had been talking to a blob it had been holding and appeared to be controlling the Shoggoth, and as it died the Shoggoth sank back into the water.
Herbert reached for the blob the deep one had been talking to. It bit him and started squeezing his hand. He cut it off quickly. The Shoggoth erupted from the water and grabbed the remains of the blob before sinking back again.
The team moved to the village. It was empty so they set fire to it. The lookout post was also empty so the team then investigated the volcano in the centre of the island. They found a cave about 150 feet up the volcano. Around the entrance was a number of disturbing carvings. In the cave was a staircase leading downwards. The stairs descended into a cave. An orange glow came from a pit in the centre of the room and there was a rocket held on scaffolding above the pit. There were 16 cultists climbing over the scaffolding. There was a pool in one corner with six of the deep ones. One appeared to be a leader of the others. Cries of help came from another corner of the cage. Brady announced he was going to find Penhew then ran off.
Delores and Kok crept to where the cries originated. As they got closer they saw a huge gold statue of some hideous creature at the far end of the cave. They found thirty prisoners in a cage. The prisoners started crying out, attracting the attention of everyone in the cave. Brady immediately opened fire on the deep ones. He hit several, killing one.
Delores shot and killed one of the cultists on the scaffolding. Herbert shot the leader of the deep ones. Brady shot the deep ones again, killing three. Herbert killed the leader of the deep ones just as a Shoggoth burst out of the pool and engulfed the body before sinking back into the pool. Kok hit a cultist on the scaffolding causing him to all to his death. The last fish creature attacked Brady but the blow was deflected. Delores spotted Aubrey Penhew in a side cave opposite the cage. He was crouched and aiming a revolver at Brady.
Penhew shot Brady but the shot ricocheted off. The statue started glowing gold. Milton blasted Penhew with both barrels from his shotgun, but Penhew remained standing. Kok hit him with a crossbow bolt which just shattered. Delores and Kok started moving away from the glowing statue. Bradys gun jammed. He dropped it and drew his revolver. Penhew fired at Milton but missed, just as a black hole appeared in place of the statue, and an aspect of Nyarlathotep stepped through. Herbert went insane at the sight and Brady froze in fear. Delores and Kok ran to another side cave. Delores pulled a cord inside the cave and a steel shutter dropped, sealing the cave.
Brady killed the last deep one. Milton charged Penhew and stabbed him with his knife, but the blow was deflected. Kok and Delores started searching the cave which was filled with Egyptian artefacts and a throne as something pushed against the steel shutter causing a large rent. They fled through a passage behind the throne. Milton tried to grapple Penhew but he dodged. He looked more like a man of 20 than one in his 50s. Kok and Delores found a sarcophagus with Penhews face carved on the top. Kok pushed the lid causing something to break and a gas rose from the sarcophagus.
Brady attacked Penhew who cast a spell, breathing out a cloud of foulness which engulfed Miltons head. The steel stutter was rent as a tentacle from Nyarlathotep finally pushed through. Brady was hit by a spell cast by Penhew, causing his skin to blister and bubble as Milton grappled Penhew. Kok and Delores found the sarcophagus to be empty. Kok pushed the lid off, breaking it in half.
Brady and Milton dragged Penhew to the edge of the lava pit, pushing past the remaining cultists. Brady pulled Penhew over the edge into the lava pit, dragging Milton in too. Nyarlathotep moved to the pit as Kok and Delores crept out of the Egyptian room and into the other cave which was Penhews workshop and closed the door. There was a cone from the top of the rocket and a lead casket. Inside the casket was a metal cylinder. Something started smashing at the door. Kok smashed the cylinder against the wall. It opened and a glowing green rock fell out. Kok smashed it into tiny pieces with the lead casket. The banging on the door stopped. Delores opened the door. Nyarlathotep was nowhere to be seen, but there were twelve cultists that had been in the scaffolding.
The cultists demanded their surrender so they could be sacrificed. Kok replied by skewering one. Delores shot and killed two. Kok then killed another two. Delores took some blows that were deflected by the flesh ward she had previously cast. Kok killed another two as Delores gun jammed and Kok was struck a bad blow. He then killed another two as Delores was struck again as Kok killed the last cultist. There was a flash of light and Nyarlathotep appeared. He looked at them with contempt and stepped through the portal which closed behind.
Kok and Delores set fires to destroy the rocket, workshop and everything else in the cave, and released the prisoners. Herbert never regained his sanity but Delores insured he had a comfortable place in a home for the incurably insane back in England where he could be visited by Naomi. Kok returned to his life in Shanghi and Delores returned to America to continue running the Swaine steel empire. Edward recovered with rest and also returned to his life in America.
