The ship arrived in Mombasa. The Ahja Singh exports office was at Kilindini harbour several hundred yards from where the ship docked. The team asked about the shipments to JuJu house. Ailsa paid him $150 for his time. The shipments were arranged by Mukunga and Edward Gavigan. When he left the room Ailsa looked through some accounts They were written in Hindustani but she was able to decipher the addresses not written in Hindustani. There were shipments to:
⚬ Ho Fong Imports (Shanghai)
⚬ The Penhew Foundation (London)
⚬ Omar Shakti (Egypt)
⚬ Silas N’Kwane (c/o Emerson Imports, New York)
⚬ The Randolph Shipping Co. (two Australia addresses, Port Hedland and Darwin).
There are many entries for Tandoor Singh in Nairobi. Most of the international shipments are entered as objects d’art. Those sent to Tandoor are entered as casks or bricks of tea.
The team were shown a crate ready to be shipped to Shanghai. Inside was a collection of what looked like light bulbs, curious shaped pipework and a curious piece with lenses.
The team booked into a hotel for the night. They started talking with Rob Lexington, and American who had just arrived and was going North to a lodge run by Colonel Endicott to hunt bug game. The team offered to travel with him to Nairobi in the morning.
In the morning the team took the train to Nairobi. About an hour from Nairobi two flying balls which glowed red and blue appeared alongside the carriage. They burned their way in, setting fire to the train. Penelope and Ailsa fled to the dining car. Herbert started shouting at everyone to evacuate the carriage. The balls flew at Herbert and Lexington forcing them to dodge. The carriage started to burn furiously, forcing Herbert and Lexington to the far end. Herbert shot through one of the water pipes in the toilet and started wielding it like a hose. Lexington copied him.
Ailsa got a large soda bottle from the bar and returned to the first class cartridge. Due to the intensity of the fire she had to climb over the roof to get to the far end of the cartridge. One of the fiery balls hit Lexington, burning him. Herbert sprayed the red ball twice with water and it exploded in a shower of steam. Lexington also showered the blue ball with water. Ailsa reached the far end of the cartridge and sprayed at the blue ball with the soda bottle. Herbert sprayed it and it exploded in a shower of steam.
The train slowly stopped and the fire was eventually put out. The team found a table in the dining car to sit for the rest of the journey. They had to share it with a businessman called Milton. When they arrived at Nairobi the team checked into the Highland hotel.
When Milton left the train he spotted someone who appeared to be watching him. When the individual realised he had been spotted he ran and Milton gave chase. When Milton caught him he turned and attacked with a knife. Milton disarmed him and then knocked him out. Milton found photos of the team in the man's wallet. The man also had keys, a cylinder and amulet. Milton then dragged him to the Highland hotel where he found Penelope and Ailsa in the bar. He showed them the pictures and the man was taken up to Penelope's room to be questioned further.
In the man's wallet was a business card for Tandoor Singh, tea shop in Browntown, Nairobi. When the man regained conscious he was questioned. He said the team were enemies of the great one and must be destroyed. Nyarlathotep appears at the mountain of the black wind. To go there is to seek death. The high priestess M'weru was there. Once the team had finished questioning him, Milton knocked him out again and took him to the police station saying he had been attacked. On the way Milton administered a poison with the intention of him dying in the police cell.
The team met for lunch. Milton joined them as did Lexington. The cylinder was opened and contained a scroll. On it, written in Latin was a spell to summon and bind fire vampires. In the afternoon the team went to investigate Tandoor's tea shop. The shop was closed but one of the keys Milton found on the man opened the door. Searching the shop, the team found a ledger and a trapdoor hidden under a barrel. When the trapdoor was lighted they found stairs leading down to a small room which appeared to have been excavated by hand. At the far end was a statue. There was at least a dozen shallow depressions in the floor which looked like they could be graves. In the corner was a cabinet and in the centre was a pillar with a set of handcuffs attached.
As the team investigated a smell of death permeated the room. The cabinet was locked but one of the keys opened it. Inside was a meat cleaver with a symbol engraved on the handle, a packet of something, a book in Latin called the Cthaat Aquadingen and a yellow robe embroidered with the same symbol as on the cleaver. In the packet was 15 incense cones. Herbert opened the book and a gust of wind blew from nowhere, blowing the book open to a page with a spell called strike blind. Another gust of wind blew the book again to a page with a passage which read:
and it was dated 14th January 1926
The team heard sounds of a door being forced up in the shop and they quickly retuned up to the store room where they took cover. Three armed thugs were in the shop and attacked. Milton opened fire with his shotgun, killing one and Penelope shot another. Milton killed another of the thugs when he was charged by the thug. The other thug charged Penelope and skewered her with a sword, killing her instantly. The last two thugs were then quickly cut down.
The police were called and told the team had been attacked when they came to buy some tea.
The team looked for the Victoria bar, and found out it had changed name to the royal defender pub. A soldier there remembered nails Nelson. His squad spent two weeks in Aberdere forest before finding the bodies of the Carlyle expedition. There were no complete bodies, just parts spread around. His commanding officer Lieutenant Selkirk died in a barracks fire a couple of years ago and 'shooting stars' had been seen at the time. The team waited and after an hour Nelson arrived. He knew Jack Brady form the Carlyle expedition and remembered seeing him in Honk Kong in the Yellow Lilly bar in Wan Shan street in 1923. They spoke and had a drink.
The team then visited the offices of the Nairobi star newspaper. The editor Natalie Smythe-Forbes remembered the Carlyle expedition. They stayed at the Hampton house and were going on an expedition to the great rift valley. She had a photograph labelled 'the Carlisle expedition' in which Hypatia Masters looked heavily pregnant. Natalie said she had been dating Carlyle and they all had an unsettling demeanour. They had dealings with a Dr Horris Starett the rector at the chapel of snows and Mr Neville Germaine, a barrister at government house though she did not know what about. She knew of Johnstone Kenyatta and thought he acted above his station. Sam Mariga did floral arrangements at the train station. She referred Elias Jackson to Roger Corridon at government house and Captain Montgomery who was in charge at the time of the Carlyle expedition.
Colonel Endicott came into the office demanding to see the editor. He was upset at the reporting of deaths at his lodge. There had been animal attacks which the newspaper reported as being due to a rogue lion. He said the bites were too small for a lion. The team calmed him down and started a discussion. He knew a lot about the surrounding area and where the Carlyle expedition remains were found.
The team then went to the train station to find Sam Mariga. Wilfrid asked him about the mountain of the black wind and the cult of the bloody tongue. He said he had seen bad things such as burning monsters and spirits. She was a powerful priestess of the dark god called the black wind and was called M'weru. She had a personal guard of the strongest and fittest of the Nandi tribe. Kenyatta would know more about the priestess, his father was a witch doctor. Sam knew the Aberere forest and offered to be a guide.
The team then visited Kenyatta in Blacktown. He warned about getting involved with the black wind. He thought the Nandi's were involved with the deaths of the Carlyle expedition. He knew a powerful shaman called Old Bundari but warned if the team met him there would be no turning back. He warned Nyarlathotep may try to corrupt the team during their journey and offered to teach some simple spells. Wilfrid was interested in learning them.
Wilfrid spent the day with Kenyatta. Ailsa and Herbert visited the rector Horris Starett. They arranged for Penelope to be buried on the 27th then asked what he knew of the Carlyle expedition. He examined the body parts after the massacre and was the medical expert providing advice for the expedition. He thought Carlyle always seemed tipsy and thought some darkness was following the expedition. He thought they were all lost souls. All the body parts he examined were black and it looked like the bodies had been torn to pieces. He thought it was strange that although they had been dead for several weeks before being found, there was no evidence of animals having gnawed on them. He had also heard the area they had been found was unusually cold.
They then met with Wilfred and Kenyetta who drove the team to the village of Boyovu west of Nairobi to see Old Bundari. Old Bundari's assistant Okomu wanted to test the team to ensure they were worthy of meeting Old Bundari. He asked a few questions before the team were admitted to Old Bundari's hut. There were many symbols of warding inside. Old Bundari was old and thin, and wearing only a loin cloth. He was meditating and did not stir for 6 hours. They fell asleep and were woken the following morning.
Old Bundari knew the team wished to travel to the mountain of the Black Wind to defeat the cult. He warned Herbert would meet a bad end if he did not change his ways. He warned the Carlyle expedition were corrupted by Nyharlethotep and not killed by the Nandi though some had died. He warned Hypatia carried the child of Nyharlethotep and must be killed before the child was born. Jack Brady was the only uncorrupted member of the expedition.
He had two artefacts he offered to lend to the team if they attempted to defeat the bloody tongue cult. One was a Fly whisk with an ebony handle carved by symbols to protect against evil spirits. It bolsters defence against magical powers and boosts any use of mythos skills. Wilfrid took it. He gave Herbert a cage containing a reptile called 'Who' which was not what she seemed. She would protect but not against magic. The cage should not be opened if she had not been fed. He recommended Sam and Kenyetta accompany the team to the mountain.
The team then returned to Nairobi and began preparing to travel to the mountain of the Black Wind.
The team attended Penelope's funeral.
The team travelled towards the mountain. They travelled for many days without major incident. Herbert slipped and hurt his leg, slowing the team for a while, then later got bitten by ants one night and needed some treatment. Finally after many days Alisa saw a group of about a dozen, mostly men dressed in robes provisioned for a journey. They seemed to be heading the same direction as the team. Herbert spotted that they were wearing inverted Ankhs through his binoculars. The team decided to follow them until nightfall. Sam and Kenyetta then sneaked into their camp and stole some of their robes.
Milton spotted a stone face among the roots of tree. As Edward started clearing round it, a snake tried to bite him then slithered off. Other snakes could be seen slithering about. Johnston Kenyetta identified them as Green Mambas which were very poisonous. After a while they slithered away. The team continued until the mountain of the black wind finally appeared in the distance. Sam pointed out the tracks where a large number of people had passed in the same direction the team were travelling. Milton heard voices in several languages from ahead. A man was spotted about 40ft up in a tree and holding a rifle. Another sentry was spotted on a rocky outcrop. The path lead to the top of a hill where there were another 6 robed figures. The sounds of a waterfall could also be heard somewhere nearby.
Kenyetta spoke to one of them and reported they were torturing some victims in advance of the main ritual this evening. The team decided to go round the hill. On the far side the area opened up into a valley at the foot of the mountain. There were thousands of people of all races camped out there. An unnatural looking path was spotted leading up the mountain to a ledge and cave. It looked like there were people in the cave.
Wilfred cast a spell allowing him to speak with birds. He asked a bird to fly to the cave and report what it saw in exchange for a treat. The sun set as the team waited for it to return. When it returned the bird reported there were no other birds near the cave and there was a bad smell of rotting things, lots of bones, a big chair and a big cage full of people in the cave. On the chair was a woman surrounded by lots of men.
The team descended into the valley and started making their way through the crowds. No one stopped the team as they made their way up the path. The mountain was a dormant volcano and Milton recognised the cave as being a natural lava tube. A flickering red light could be seen from inside. Milton scouted into the cave to look round. There was a passage leading to a cavern in the centre of which was a pile of bones and rotting corpses. There was also a throne carved into the form of an aspect of Nyharlethotep and an iron cage with about 50 people inside. Ailsa spotted a small hardwood box behind the throne. There was no one else to be seen.
As Ailsa and Wilfred approached the throne, Wilfred spotted the seam of a door behind the throne. The keys to the cage were hanging on the wall and Milton unlocked the cage causing the people to fall out. Inside the box was a high quality marine timepiece set to Greenwich mean time. Wilfred set the clock back 15 minutes at Ailsa's suggestion so if it was being used to synchronise the ritual with someone in London it would be out of sync.
There were symbols round the door. Wilfred pushed some at random and the door opened. Beyond was a steep ramp leading upwards. Milton scouted ahead. It took half an hour for the team to climb to the top of the ramp to where it opened out into a cavern. There was the sound of voices nearby. A dim brown glow came from the fungus covered ceiling. There were six columns holding up the ceiling which appeared to be made from tentacles which writhed and there were people manacled to the columns. The walls and floor were cut from a different stone and covered with symbols and images. In the centre was an altar stone from which emanated a blue glow. A black woman was tied on the altar with another black woman standing over and wielding a dagger preparing to strike down. There were ten armed men in the cavern and a singing voice from a dark corner.
Milton released the lizard Who from its cage. It scuttled to the nearest guard and started to swell in size far larger than a cow then grabbed the guard with its tongue and swallowed him, then trod on another guard, killing him. Milton shot at another guard. He hit the guard squarely in the chest but the guard just staggered. Six of the guards attacked Who, which fought back, killing two of them. The other two guards moved to protect the priestess. Milton shot and killed one of them.
Edward opened fire with his Tommy gun at the priestess emptying the magazine without hitting anyone. Ailsa shot and killed another of the guards. One of the guards threw a spear at Ailsa, skewering her, pinning her to the wall and killing her instantly. The guards attacked Who again and two were killed. The guard who killed Ailsa charged Wilfred but he dodged. Who then killed the last guard attacking it. The priestess cast a spell on Milton which drove him insane. He fell to his knees and hugged the ground in an insane fear that he was going to fall.
Who then swallowed the priestess then crushed the last guard. Wilfred cast a spell and started talking to Who. Who said 'time to go' then disappeared. The team illuminated the corner from which the singing originated. It revealed a huge amorphous blob with the head of Hypatia Masters and eyes in her hugely inflated stomach. She was clearly insane. Wilfred and Milton opened fire on her. It took four shots to kill what remained of her but the creature in her stomach was still alive. The team opened fire on the creature which started wreathing then the stomach started to rip as it started tearing itself free. It died in a hail of bullets from Edwards Tommy gun. Wilfred then set fire to the remains. Wilfred broke off a chunk of the altar stone as he believed it could be used to store magical power.
The crowds in the valley dispersed over several hours.
The team took the long route back to Nairobi to avoid the cultists. During the journey Milton secretly administered a poison to Kenyetta as he had a contract on his life. When they were a day away from Nairobi Kenyetta started convulsing in pain. Wilfred cast a spell on him to relieve him of the pain. The team camped for three days and cared for him and he finally recovered, much to Miltons disgust. They finally arrived back in Nairobi in the evening. Milton helped Kenyetta back to his house where he strangled Kenyetta.
The team took the train back to Mombassa and caught a ship to Shanghai. Wilfred returned to London to write the story of his adventure. Delores said she would meet the team in Shanghai.
