Kastenberg

We found the Mahakam Dwarves. They were from a village called Kastenberg. We travelled by barge on the Pontal river to flotsam then took our cart to Kastenberg where we were introduced to the mayor and the Mine foreman Martin Kurtz. He looked very agitated compared to the mayor as though he knew more. We were told the miners Kurt Zondervan and Alex Muller have both disappeared though some of their equipment had been found on the lower level. (lanterns, oil, props, rope, hammers, etc). Alex had disappeared 19 hays ago and Kurt 8 days ago. The rest of the miners had refused to enter the mine since. The mayor might lend us some magic lights while we investigated.

We spent the evening in the inn. While there, Bulgar followed Martin to the toilet and demanded to know what was going on. After some threats, Martin finally told us a month ago a wizard had showed up with his henchman. He asked the mayor for a map of the mines but the mayor turned him down. Martin then sold him a map of the mine for 30 orins. The wizard was looking for a lost magical treasure in the mine and Martin took them in twice. They then went on their own a third time and never came back. The wizard had sold the mayor the magic lights. Wizard was a human and had a magic staff with red crystal on top and wore blue robes with gold sigils. When in the mine he seemed to be using it to look for something and it would glow when he stopped.

Scathe went to talk to the mayor about the lights. On the way he met an old dwarf called Wilhelm who asked "Have you come here to get rid of Ridley?" He took Scathe to his shack and said he knew what had happened before, a long time ago. This is the second time as it had happened, 50 years ago. A mage came looking for something in the mine and summoned something from chaos which went on a rampage before disappearing after a few weeks. He had a page from a magical book called the Libram Libris Bestiis Chaotis.

“Over Land and the Firmament doth Chaose marche, and the Beneathe is not free from it. Consider the Ambulle that with his fearsome Jawes and Clawes doth his own Tunnelles make, clearing cold Stone from his path as a Man dothe sweep grass aside in the Forests.”

Scathe offered to make the page disappear for 10 days and used an illusion spell to create an image of the page allowing him to take the page for further study. Wilhelm said Ralph might have seen it when he was a lad and that Ralph would probably be in the inn.

Scathe continued on to speak to the mayor and borrowed one of the magic lights from him. When he returned we found Ralph who was indeed in the inn. Ralph described a wizard who came and meddled 50 years ago. At that time Four men disappeared. He claimed to have seen a big shambling creature, bigger than a bear, which hunched down and moved on all fours. De described it as going through the rock like it was not there. Bulgar knew of Ambulles, a subterranean fiend which was summoned through portals. They would stay near the portal, feeding off the magical energy. They were very dumb creatures but very tough and armour plated.

In the morning I made some Relic oil and a moondust bomb for Bulgar. We then went into the mine and down a shaft into the lower level. There was a single tunnel the dwarves had made out of the cavern we found ourselves in, but there looked to be a more crude tunnel beyond a rockfall in one of the workfaces. Scathe sensed a powerful source of energy about 20 yards below us so we returned to the upper level where Scathe cast an illusion spell to try to attract the Ambulle to the magical energy.

AmbulleAfter a while we heard what sounded like something burrowing up. Suddenly two creatures erupted from the floor of the cavern. Bulgar threw the moondust bomb, hitting them both. Scathe cast spells at both of the creatures, causing flaming serpents to appear and attack. Bulgar then stepped up and attacked one of the creatures which clawed him in the head. Scathe cast more spells at the other creature, showering it with stone projectiles. It was a brutal fight as the creatures were very tough, and Bulgar was seriously wounded before we killed the first of the creatures. There was no way we were going to be able to then defeat the second creature so I fled the mine as Scathe teleported away with Bulgar.

While Bulger recovered from his wounds I made another Moon Dust bomb. We then returned to the mine to find the second Ambulle. We tried climbing down the tunnel made by one of the Ambulles when they had bored up to attack us previously. Bulgar went first, slipping down with Scathe and myself following. We found ourselves in a cavern with a glowing portal in the centre. The Ambulle was hunkered down, but roared and attacked when Bulgar threw the Moon Dust bomb at it.

Scathe summoned snakes of fire which attacked and grappled the Ambulle, setting it on fire. This Ambulle was far weaker than the first and died quickly. There was no way out of the cavern except the passages the Ambulles had made, and the portal but we could feel a wind blowing from the portal. There were the mostly consumed remains of two humans and two dwarves on the floor.

Scathe cast a spell to speak with the dead mage. His name was Morgas the Magnificent. He had come to the mine seeking something called the wind sword which was an ancient relic of elemental air power. His staff had lead him to where he created the portal but he was attacked as he was about to step through. He said if we were to retrieve the sword, his spirit could rest in peace. He said the staff on his gemstone had qualities so I removed the ruby from the remains of the staff and gave it to Scathe. There appeared to be sounds of wind and something inside the gem.

Letho Of GuletWe stepped through the portal and found ourselves on a mountaintop at the entrance of a natural cavern. There were three trees in the ledge near us, a sturdy pine, a fruit tree and a scraggly pine. Scathe recognised the fruit tree as an extremely rare Windberry tree. As we investigated, a bald man with golden eyes stepped out from behind the scraggly tree. He was a witcher called Letho of Gulet. He said we were on Griffin mountain in the Blue mountains.

Scathe and myself gathered some windberry fruit while the witchers talked. Letho was also looking for the wind sword for his patron, the emperor of Nilfgaard, who had promised to reopen a witcher school if he was successful. We entered the cavern. We found a copper bowl and fragments of chain armour on the floor, then we heard a fluttering and screeching sound from further in the cavern, before a griffin emerged.

Letho charged the Griffin and Bulgar followed him. As they fought a second griffin emerged from the darkness. Scathe hit the injured the griffin with a ball of fire as Letho charged the second Griffin which let out a screech, stunning myself and Scathe. The fight continued and the first griffin was killed by Bulgar, but a third flew out of the caverns towards us. Letho killed the second just as the third arrived. Bulgar charged it. Letho stood back and let Bulgar fight it. It took Bulgar some time to kill it on his own.

I patched up Bulgar then we started exploring the caverns where we found a strange stone bubble 7 metres in diameter. The bubble was hollow and Scathe sensed it had some magical properties so I started working on breaking into the bubble. After a while Bulgar got impatient and started smashing the bubble, breaking it and revealing a black interior and a human corpse with a crescent shaped wound on its forehead. The corpse looked fresh but the armour, sword and clothing was ancient, at least a thousand years old.

Scathe stepped into the bubble to retrieve some coins and ring that was on the body. As he did so the ring started glowing red. He picked up the coins and sword and the corpse was dragged out as the broken edges of the bubble started showing signs of repairing itself. We heard screeches from outside and Letho ran out to attack another griffin. Scathe summoned the spirit of the corpse. He said his name was Windlass of the air clan, and a protector of law. He was brought here a long time ago to protect the wind sword from forces of chaos that might come to capture it. He said whoever took the sword must worship the law and to fight chaos. Held had been held in stasis, but the stasis had failed and he died. He said the wind sword was guarded by a wraith in the chamber of the sword and could be found at the bottom of a perilous shaft. We were told the ring glowed in the presence of magic.

Letho returned after killing another griffin. We explored further into the caverns and found a shaft in a cave at the far end. Bulgar dropped a pebble down and estimated it was probably 80-100 metres deep. Letho said he would stay and protect myself and Scathe while Bulgar climbed down using some rope to get the sword. We heard Bulgar talking to someone then the sounds of fighting.

While we were waiting, Scathe looked round and found a leather satchel containing herbs. When it became apparent Bulgar was not succeeding in killing whatever he was fighting, Scathe teleported down to help him. Finally Bulgar was victorious and we lowered him to the bottom.

We heard nothing else so Letho climbed down to find out what had happened to them. He reported finding nothing at the bottom and said he would climb back up. I heard something behind me and found Bulgar creeping in. They had found a white sword with two ethereal creatures dancing in the pommel at the bottom of the shaft and Scathe had teleported them out. Bulgar wanted us to leave before Letho had climbed back up. I screamed to make Letho think something bad had happened to me, then we left quickly. After passing through the portal, Scathe dispelled it. They had dragged the body of Windass through the portal as well, and Scathe arranged for all the bodies to be buried.

In distance towards Temeria we saw smoke in the sky. Suddenly the necklace from uncle started projecting an image of Cari, my older sister. Scathe said she was communicating using a telecommunicator ritual and my necklace must also be a telecommunicator. Cari said she needed my help. She knew where our father was, needed my help to break him out and asked me to meet her in Ebbing. She said to meet where we used to go fishing in the summer. The mayor warned of seeing Nilfgaard soldiers in the mountains.
