Kelvin has no more work for the group so they seek their own. Isabel is contacted by Brother Adwin who explains that four high-ranking clerics from the main Temple in Ranke are coming to Sanctuary to write a report on the local church. Brother Adwin suggests that some of the activities of the church in Sanctuary could cause problems and he asks Isabel to ensure that the four clerics produce a good report. He keenly points out that violence and murder are not an option. The four clerics are staying at The Golden Oasis. He gives Isabel 2000 gold to pay the rest of her group in order to get their help.
At this time they group recruits Ulag Ulag, a male human cleric (played by Billy).
Arthur is contacted by Galton who explains he has a customer who needs help and that Arthur might be interested. He gives him an address of a prosperous rug merchant in the Jewellers' Quarter. The merchant explains that a new caravan owner called Thab has opened up a profitable silk route. The merchant's main rival is called Jaleem and he is extremely rich. Jaleem is throwing a massive party at his mansion for Thab in the hope of signing an agreement with him. The merchant either cannot or will not throw such a party himself and instead is offering 2000 gold if Arthur and his companions can ruin the party. The merchant is confident he can get an agreement signed with Thab if the party goes badly. He explains that Jaleem is well protected so any heavy handed attempts to spoil the party are likely to fail. He asks Arthur to be as subtle as possible.
The group meets at Martha's Place and Isabel and Arthur tell them about their offers. Isabel does not mention any amount of money to the group. Arthur is vague about amounts. Both are keen to pocket as much of respective sums as possible. The group decides to go to The Golden Oasis to investigate the clerics of Sabellia.
On the way over the group is requisitioned by the City Watch to help with crowd control duties while the City Watch enters a house and arrests the inhabitants. One of the City Watch, Corporal Olaykon, is left outside to co-ordinate the group. The group are just as desperate to get into the house to loot it as the crowd they are supposed to be keeping back, and it doesn't take long for their crowd control techniques to prove ineffective. A mob storms inside the house, as do Tarod and Scathe. Aruther remains outside as does Isabel, who is knocked off her feet by the mob storming the house. Inside the house Tarod decides to help the felons being arrested by attacking the City Watch. Four of the City Watch are killed before Corporal Olaykon is able to escape the house. In the meantime Arthur, unaware of what has happened inside the house, locates a nearby patrol of City Watch. As they approach the scene Corporal Olaykon emerges from the house screaming for help closely followed by Scathe, Tarod and the remaining felons, all intent on finishing the Corporal off. They spot the approaching City Watch patrol that Arthur has rounded up and wisely flee from the scene.
The group takes refuge in the Maze and Kelvin orders them to keep off the streets for a few days. He asks Tarod to not get involved with the City Watch unless absolutely necessary in order not to jeopardise any of the Guild's activities.
After the two days hiatus the group decides to investigate Jaleem's mansion. They discover it to be a hive of activity but with extremely good security. Isabel's attempts to gain employment as a cook fail. Tarod has more success befriending one Jaleem's washerwoman at the communal well. He bribes her and she tells him that the party is by invitation only. The invitations were produced by Melilot and have already gone out. There is also a guest book in the house with a list of all the names, which will be used on the night to match with the invitations.
The party spends some time discussing their plans. They settle for a plan that involves the washerwoman bringing them the book, a Guild forger entering their names (obviously not their real names) in the guest book, and the washerwoman returning the book before its absence is noticed. Once they see the names on the list the group will make a note of some names, break into a house and steal an invitation which the forger can use to produce invitations for them matching the names they have entered into the guest book!
The first part of the plan goes well and their assumed names are entered into the guest book. Unfortunately for the party the name of the person from the list whose house they propose to break into is Feltheryn. He is an actor who has a company called Feltheryn's Players. His very well respected and regularly perform in the Palace. He owns a large house right outside the Palace. This does not deter the group and when Feltheryn leaves his house that night with some of his guards to visit one of the brothels, the group breaks in.
His house is still well guarded and the burglary goes spectacularly wrong. Ulag is knocked unconscious, Isabel is killed and Tarod is captured. Only Scathe and Arthur managed to flee.
Feltheryn is summoned by his guards and he interrogates Tarod and Ulag. They tell Feltheryn the truth. Feltheryn explains that he bears them no grudge and the healing potions and magic ring he retrieves from Isabel's body are adequate compensation. He actually offers the group the opportunity to forge a copy of his invitation if they will do a small job for him. He refuses to explain what the job is until Scathe and Arthur are present. Ulag leaves to find them.
Scathe and Arthur are actually right outside Feltheryn's mansion, watching what happens. Unsure whether they will need to attempt to break in again they decide to recruit some help. They spot an incredibly old man walking down the Street of Red Lanterns and are stunned when he dispatches two potential muggers with contemptuous ease. His name is Peepee, a male human monk (played by Dave), and he is recruited into the group.
Scathe and Arthur spot Ulag leaving Feltheryn's mansion and make themselves known to him. Ulag explains the situation and they decide to see what Feltheryn has to offer.
Feltheryn explains that he will allow the group to forge his invitation if they ruin a performance that very evening by an up-and-coming actor called Oscar. He wants them to gain access to the gangway above the stage and drop Isabel's body on to the stage. He also makes the group promise not to do anything to disrupt his troupe's performance at Jaleem's party.
The group sneaks Isabel's body to the theatre by travelling along the outskirts of Sanctuary, behind Temple Row. There are two guards at the rear entrance of the theatre. The first is easily dispatched, being finished off by Ulag's death touch. Seeing this the second surrenders and the group allows him to flee. Tarod cuts the limbs off the dead guard in order to drop the torso onto the stage with Isabel's body, while Ulag removes his heart.
There is only one stage hand inside the door and he is quickly intimidated into compliance by Tarod. Arthur and Ulag climb on to the gangway. Arthur secures one of Isabel's legs to the gangway and Ulag slices her stomach open. They then her swing over the stage, the cut disgorging her entrails onto the actors below. For good measure Arthur throws a thunderstone at Oscar thus ensuring that there is no way he can continue with the performance. The group then wisely flee.
With a job well done the group gets a Guild forger to copy Feltheryn's invitation for each of them.
The following night of the party the group enters Jaleem's mansion with their forged invitations without any problems. Tarod, Scathe, and Ulag are equipped with rotten eggs, and Arthur has purchased a drug from Alten Stulwig that will make people ill - very much like food poisoning. Peepee pretends to be Tarod's father.
The group mingles for a while. Thab, the caravan owner whom Jaleem is trying to impress, is curt and unapproachable. Arthur manages to drug a few of the canopies and Tarod breaks an egg in the toilet. Ulag meets Redella, an attractive woman who is to dance later in the evening. The first entertainment of the evening, knife throwing by Jaleem's son, Menaka, begins.
Scathe competes against Menaka but is soundly beaten. For the last part of his entertainment Menaka asks for a volunteer brave enough to have a target placed on his head. Tarod volunteers but his nerves of steel mean that he doesn't flinch (intentionally or otherwise) while the knives are thrown and Menaka's feat of skill is a resounding success, much to the disappointment of the rest of the group.
Scathe takes this opportunity to try and plant an egg into Thab's pocket in order to break it later. Unfortunately Thab notices and Scathe is ejected from the party. Using the ruckus created by Scathe being ejected Tarod seizes the opportunity to throw an egg at Thab. It is a fine throw and leaves Thab covered in an unpleasant smelling egg but Tarod is spotted throwing the egg and also ejected from the party. For good measure Peepee, posing as Tarod's father, is also ejected.
No opportunity to ruin the main course when it is served presents itself to Ulag or Arthur. Neither does one present itself during Redella's dance as the guests remain seated. Ulag and Arthur are true to their promise and do nothing to disrupt Feltheryn's performance.
Dancing closes the party and Ulag is able to drop the heart he cut from the guard the previous night unseen onto the dance floor. This brings the dancing to an abrupt halt and causes several people (probably starting to feel the effects of the drugged canopies) to be sick. At this point, Thab is now visibly furious. Ulag and Arthur leave with another job well done.
Redella accompanies Ulag and takes him back to her place. There she reveals that she is actually a thief and was able to lift several nice pieces of jewellery as a result of Ulag dropping the heart. In return she gives him one of the rings she stole.
