The following morning the group meets Kelvin at The Vulgar Unicorn for some work. Kelvin asks the group to do two things: firstly visit a baker called Purlas in Processional who is behind in his protection money. Kelvin asks them to break his leg. Secondly he wants them to rob a new bookshop in the Jewellers' Quarter - Ilop's Book Emporium - making sure to kill somebody in the process as the first part of the Guild's efforts to extract protection money from Ilop. Kelvin also mentions that a high ranking member of the Guild called Maximillion was assassinated the previous night and he will reward any information that is uncovered about the assassination.

The group visits Purlas and completes the first task. In doing so they discover that his cellar contains a portal to a strange alternate Sanctuary where non-humans rule Sanctuary and humans are considered the monsters. It appears that the Thieves Guild rule this alternate Sanctuary and there are government organised robberies and burglaries. The group stumbles across an official robbery by some Orcs whom they are able to kill, but not before the Orcs kill Sucellus. The group decides that the alternate Sanctuary is even more dangerous than their own Sanctuary and return through the portal.

Isabel is extremely curious about what has happened and decides to see if her church is interested. Scathe, Snake and Finchy want to talk to the Guild about this development. However, on the way they decide to complete their second assignment and rob Ilop's Book Emporium. The robbery is processing nicely when a customer in the shop turns out to be a spellcaster. He puts Snake to sleep and they are forced to flee.

Isabel succeeds in getting Brother Adwin to accompany her to Purlas' shop. Unfortunately for her the City Watch have been alerted by someone after all the recent commotion in the bakery. Even more unfortunate for her is that Purlas, who is fearful of the Guild and tries to explain his broken limb as an accident, is poor liar. Purlas and Isabel find themselves being arrested.

Once in custody Purlas tells all. Isabel thus finds herself confronted by Zalbar who, after Reg's death, is still looking for an informant in the Guild. Isabel agrees to his demands and is realised.

The group meets at The Vulgar Unicorn and decide to have another attempt at Ilop's Book Emporium. This attempt is more successful. During the robbery another woman appears who is also trying to rob the shop. Specifically she is looking for a particular book. Isabel befriends her and she tells Isabel her story back at Martha's Place.
