The Sack

At The Vulgar Unicorn Parnice introduces the group to Kelvin. Kelvin offers the group the chance to join the Guild. He tells them they will have to pay 20% of their earnings to the Guild and perform a small task for him for free to prove their worth. The group agrees, knowing that they will get more work if they are in the Guild. Kelvin tells them that one of his men, Yelander, was supposed to meet a courier bearing a sack at The Gate of Gold at midday and bring the sack to Kelvin. It is now long past midday and Kelvin tells the group to find his sack and bring it to him. He gives the group Yelander's address in Coffin Cross in the Maze.

The group visits Yelander and he tells them that he sent one of his men, Hekk, to meet the courier and that Hekk hasn't returned. Yelander says he has all his men out searching and offers the group a reward if they find the sack. He tells them that couriers are easy to identify as they always wear orange cloaks.

The group visits Dulak at The Gate of Gold, who they heard about from Tallos. Dulak tells them that he saw the courier they describe being met by another man, who the group assume is Hekk, and overheard them talking about going to The Golden Oasis for a drink.

The Golden Oasis is a tavern popular with newcomers to Sanctuary because it is easy to find and accessed by main roads, thus reasonably safe to get to. Inside they talk to the owner, Jord Blacktongue, who says he can help them but only if they help him in return. Jord explains that an upstart gang are trying to extract protection money from him and he asks the group to resolve this problem.

This is easy work for the group who lure the gang into an ambush and kill the gang leader. In return Jord tells them that he allows several thieves to use his tavern to spot newcomers in order to follow them and mug them. In return the thieves pay Jord a percentage of their earnings. Jord explains that one such thief, Snick, followed the courier and Hekk earlier that day, although Jord has not seen him since. He tells the group that they will probably find Snick in The Vulgar Unicorn and they decide to look for him here.

What the group don't know is that Snick followed the courier and Hekk to Yelander's house in Coffin Cross but that they never came out. The group never get to talk to Snick to discover this because they decide to stop off at Yelander's house on their way to The Vulgar Unicorn. What they do discover is that Yealdner is the traitor of this little drama. No one appears to be home when they arrive but upon investigating the cellar they discover the bodies of the courier, Hekk and Kelvin's sack. Yelander was in the process of leaving when the group calls and panics, hoping that if he pretends not to be at home the group will leave. When they enter the cellar where he is hiding and discover the bodies and the sacks he realises that the game is up. He half-heartedly tries to attack the party but is no match for them.

With Yelander uncovered and disarmed, Kelvin is sent for. He arrives and takes possession of the sack and Yelander. The group is now part of the Thieves Guild and Kelvin tells them to come and see him in the morning at The Vulgar Unicorn for some work. In return for unmasking Yelander he gives Snake and Isabel Yelander's house.

The group returns to Martha's Place to celebrate being admitted to the Guild. Here they are rejoined by Sucellus. Martha hands a note to Snake and Isabel from Amoli. Amoli demands to see them at her brothel. She refers to their recent attack on her brothel but assures them that she does not want their lives, having claimed those of Reg and Englebert.

Finchy and Sucells decide to accompany Snake and Isabel to The Golden Lily. On the way they encounter a priest of Sabellia who says that the goddess is recieving petitions. The group decides to hurry over to Temple Row, apart from Sucellus who clearly does not worship Sabellia. Only Isabel and Finchy arrive in time, Snake not being able to run so fast. The goddess looks inside the hearts of Isabel and Finchy. Finchy's petition is rejected, but Isabel's is accepted and she becomes a convert to the church. She is introduced to Brother Adwin who will be responsible for her spiritual education.

In the meantime Sucellus bumps into a thief looking for work who is introduced to the rest of the group when they meet up. Scathe, a male human rogue (played by Warren C) thus joins the group.

At The Golden Lily Amoli explains that Snake and Isabel still owe her for their attack on her brothel. She asks them to perform a job for her which will wipe the slate clean. She tells them that she's recently discovered that a rival brothel, The Rose Arbour, has a hidden tunnel in their cellar that they don't know about. She wants them to find the tunnel and follow it to find out where it emerges. Snake and Isabel have no choice but to agree. Scathe makes a quick investigation of The Rose Arbour and the group decides to wait a while before tackling this job.

Snake and Isabel are very impressed with Scathe and allow him to stay at their house in Coffin Cross.
